Sara Butterfield

Patent Agent

Dr. Butterfield is a Patent Agent with the firm. Sara grew up in Los Angeles but has had the opportunity to live and work in different parts of the country and abroad throughout her career.

After obtaining a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from UNC Chapel Hill, Sara worked as a postdoctoral research assistant at the Skaggs Institute for Chemical Biology at the Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, CA. She later moved abroad and worked as a Scientist at the Swiss Federal Institute in Lausanne, Switzerland where her research focused on the molecular mechanisms of protein aggregation events involved in Parkinson’s disease.

Sara has a broad research background at the interface of Chemistry and Biology and has experience in peptide/protein chemistry, physical organic chemistry, analytical chemistry, molecular recognition, synthetic organic chemistry, assay development, chemical sensor development, organic solar cell development, and molecular biology techniques.

Prior to joining Miller, Matthias & Hull LLP, Sara worked as a Patent Consultant at a boutique firm in Phoenix, AZ for over a year and gained experience in patent application drafting and performing patentability searches. Sara is co-author of 16 publications, including 12 first author scientific publications and review articles. She has also passed the patent bar examination before the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
