By Brent E. Matthias - March 20, 2014
We are pleased to announce that Michael Stern has joined Miller, Matthias & Hull LLP as an Associate.
With bachelor’s degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Economics from Yale and a law degree from the University of Michigan, Michael brings impeccable credentials and the ability to handle a unique and wide array of subject matter. At MMH, Michael will draft and prosecute patent applications and render legal opinions involving mechanical, electrical, and business method innovations.
As an undergraduate, Michael earned dual Bachelor’s Degrees in Economics and Mechanical Engineering Science from Yale University in 2007. He received his J.D. from the University of Michigan Law School in 2011. During law school, Michael served on the Michigan Telecommunications and Technology Law Review for two years as Associate and Contributing Editors. Michael is admitted to practice in Illinois and is registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
Michael’s practice focuses on the mechanical arts, with specific experience in automotive, propulsion, and consumer electronics systems. His background includes CNC machining, solar and hybrid-electric vehicle design, and vegetable oil fuel conversions for diesel engines.
Michael’s professional experience prior to joining MMH introduced him to patent prosecution and provided valuable insight into the operation governmental agencies. At a previous patent prosecution boutique, Michael drafted patent applications and Office action responses in various different fields, so he has hit the ground running here at MMH. Additionally, Michael served as a Law Fellow at an environmental non-profit organization, in which capacity he drafted regulatory comments on electric vehicle charging networks and authored advocacy materials for residential photovoltaic systems and inter-city passenger rail. He also worked in the legal department of the Chicago Transit Authority. These experiences gave Michael a unique perspective of governmental agencies that informs his interactions with the USPTO.
The addition of Michael Stern continues the growth of our practice and expansion of our capabilities that has been consistent since Miller, Matthias & Hull LLP was founded back in 2005. While Michael will add to the capacity of our Mechanical Practice Group, MMH also has fully developed Chemical and Electrical/Software Practice Groups, each of which includes a number of professionals having a broad range of experience and skills.
